The Battle of Screen Time! Four Activity Ideas that don’t Involve a Screen

Dear Readers,

Are you currently facing the daily battle of too much screen time with your children?  Even as an adult I am ashamed of how much time I spend in front of screens!  With school currently being virtual in many areas’ children are in front of the computer even more.  In my research I found this is a common concern and was inspired by the creativity of others in search of a solution!  Here are a few of my finds.

1.    Sidewalk Chalk- Engage your children in drawing with sidewalk chalk and ask them guided questions that relate to the learning of the day.  Examples of this can be asking the child to draw with a specific color of chalk, instruct them to create a specific shape (if they are older maybe a shape of a country or state), or writing their name to practice their letters.

2.    Designate a period of quiet time that will be rewarded by screen time– Instruct your child to play quietly in their room and make it clear that if they follow these rules they can later watch their favorite show.  This is also a great way to get the quiet time that you need for that coveted cup of coffee!

3.    Creating a game that involves their favorite characters– When it is time to play either in inside or outside, encourage your children to create a game that involves their favorite characters from their beloved show.  This is a great opportunity for them to exercise their imagination while also practice their communication skills with their peers.

4.    Set aside time for a family activity that does not involve a screen– Carving out a time each day beyond a meal is a great opportunity to communicate and relax in each other’s company.  This activity can range from listening to music, dance parties, playing board games, putting together a puzzle, or reading quietly in the same room.  The most important element is that your choice in an activity sparks happiness in everyone involved!

Bonus Tip!!!

This last tip is inspired by my Mom, Linda, who was very passionate about education!  Before bedtime give your children a choice of reading a story or playing a game.  Many nights before bed my siblings and I choose the game option.  These games ranged from the Space Game which involved many math skills ranging from addition to multiplication to the Travel Game which quizzed our knowledge of geography.  Of all these games my personal favorite was the matching game!  For those of you who know me well you are well aware of my memory skills.  Needless to say, I was a champ at this game and attribute my memory capabilities to it!

I hope all the preparations for the coming school year are going well and you find these ideas helpful.  The best advise that I have been given is to take everything one day at a time.  Sending you all warm wishes and positive vibes to enjoy these last golden days of the summer!

Love Always,

Kristina Lucia xoxo
